Terra Patris Atellier Pousada, Praia de Barra Grande, Piauí

"small rustic-chic pousada moments from the beach"

About the Pousada

Terra Patris Atellier Pousada is a uniquely beautiful 3 bungalow pousada only 200m from the deserted unspoilt kitesurfing beach of Barra Grande, Piauí. (Not to be confused with Barra Grande on the Peninsulá de Maraú, Bahia)

I only stayed a couple of nights but loved the peace and tranquility, the attention to detail, the commitment to sustainable tourism, the fact that you can walk anywhere and the company of fabulous hosts Nathalia and Marco.

Special Notes:
* Barra Grande is not easy to get to without a car. Ask Nathalia for help in organising transfers from Teresina/Fortaleza airports/bus stations or from Parnaíba an hour's drive away
* There are Azul flights to/from Fortaleza to Parnaiba airport  on Thur/Sat/Sun and to/from Teresina on Sat/Sun. A much easier and cheaper option than a private taxi!

Alison's pousada review

Terra Patris Atellier Pousada, Barra Grande.. What can I say? There are some pousadas where you have a really good feeling before you even step through the door and this small guesthouse is definitely one of them. I don't know what it was even. Maybe a combination of email correspondance in advance and on arrival blue skies, sandy tracks, and all the flowers, but even before owner Nathalia came out to greet me I was hooked.

There are only 3 bungalows here but there's a large pool and circular reception area/bar/breakfast room where you can hang out, read or relax if you don't fancy the deserted beach moments away. The cat seems to think the futon belongs to him and there are 2 beautiful dogs which vye for attention but there is plenty of room here and Nathalia and Marco can't do enough for you.

I arrived exhausted after a 13 hour trip from the unmissable Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara- 8 hours by overnight bus to Teresina and then a 5 hour pre-arranged taxi to Barra Grande, but it was definitely worth it to get an extra 12 hours in the Terra Patris. Suites are not huge here but they're perfectly big enough for a good sized comfortable double bed and all have cable TV and Split aircon. In the bathroom the bliss of an excellent shower with nice soaps and shampoos.

I got to stay for 2 nights in the end which is already a huge privilege. Out of choice I would have stayed a lot longer.

About the location

Terra Patris Atelier Pousada is situated 200mtrs from the beach at the eastern end of Barra Grande a small fishing village on the coast of Piauí state. Officially part of the touristic "Rota das Emoções" or Emotions' Route which runs between the dunes of Lençois Maranhenses in Maranhão and Jericoacoara/Fortaleza in Ceará, its difficulty in access means it is often left off shorter itineraries leaving it surprisingly unspoilt for the many kitesurfers who have made it home, and making it a much more pleasant experience for travellers escaping noise and nightlife.

Apart from kiting Barra Grande is excellent for birding, watching seahorses and manatees in their natural habitat and just chilling out on deserted beaches. There are also interesting side trips to the Delta of Parnaiba and the Parque Sete Cidades. But the best thing for me was discovering a place where you have great places to stay and eat, where you can do everything on foot and which amazingly has still not been discovered by the masses. Long may it last!

Not to be missed

  • Chilling out in one of the laid back beach bars
  • Kitesurfing classes
  • Dinner at Manga Rosa
  • Side trips to Parque Nacional Sete Cidades & Delta de Parnaiba
Pousada Starpoints
  • Marco and Nathalia- multilingual wonderful hosts
  • Laidback atmospohere in the pousada
  • Beautiful thatched bunglaows

Try a different place if...

you don't like walking on sand or constant wind- or if you want any kind of nightlife!
