Alison's pousada review
One of the wonderful things about the special collection of Hidden Pousadas is that they are all uniquely beautiful, and Kaná, which only opened in December 2011, is one of the most hidden and unique of them all.
Set in sloping gardens of 2300 sq metres there are lush gardens, 2 pools with orthopaedic loungers,a gazebo for massage and countless places to sit and appreciate the views. Accommodation comprises 8 suites, 3 with garden views, and 5 with seaviews including 2 special honeymoon suites. The size of the suites may vary and the garden rooms don’t have the glorious high beamed ceilings of the upper seaview rooms but all have enormous super comfortable beds with top quality bed linen, double jacuzzi baths, flat screen cableTV, frigobar, split air conditioning and double showers/basins as standard. As little extras like a fuit bowl and minibottle of port to go with your bed time chocolate.
In terms of design the whole pousada bears the mark of extremely well travelled Portuguese owners Alexandra and Victor and they find out guests’ tastes in advance in order to give them the best experience possible. Each suite has a theme which evokes a different country or place they have lived or visited. Mine had the name of a Bahian Mae de Santo and was exactly my taste in décor and design. On arrival some quiet bossa nova music was playing which is what I had said was my preference in music.
Dinner is not provided as part of the deal, but it is a hobby that Victor takes very seriously and it was a supreme pleasure to sample his special fresh prawn cocktail and mango flambée.
Kana calls itself a “pousada de charme” and in portuguese that says it all, but for English speakers this is just laid back luxury with a very Brazilian/portuguese feel, a place where you get the best of international living mixed with the lush tropical beauty of Norteastern Brazil. It is definitely a place to go for a special anniversary or honeymoon but for anyone it is an ideal place to rediscover a sense of beauty, peace and well being. I loved it!
Pirangi do Norte is hard to find on most maps and even harder to find if driving as there are no signposts until you are almost right on top of it!. To make it even more difficult the pousada doesn’t take walk in bookings so they have no signposts directing you to it and likewise there is no sign on the door!!. However if you take the road though Puim coming from the south or the “Rota do Sol” coming from Ponta Negra in Natal you will get here.
The place itself is just a small fishing village with a lovely quiet stretch of sandy beach famous mainly for its enormous caju tree which is in the Guiness Book of records as the largest in the world. A place ideal for chilling, or kitesurfing or taking a fishing trip, where New Years Eve on the beach is a sight in white to behold and Carnival is still in the streets. And all this just 20 minutes away from Natal.
- The famous cajueiro- biggest Caju tree in the world
- Buggy trip down to Pipa, Baia Formosa and Sagi along the beach
- Private boat trip out to the reefs
- Trips to the lakes of Arituba and Carcara
- Fabulous accommodation
- Sea front location and views
- Personalized service
- Excellent cuisine
